Better Red Than Dead: Midweek Musings

Player updates: Everyone except our three players with long-term injuries are practicing and ready to go, according to Big Apple Soccer. Big Apple also reports that Head Coach, Hans Backe, is impressed with Chris Albright's work in practice. Brian Lewis reports that Carl Robinson has resolved his visa situation, but Ibrahim Salou Salou Ibrahim (edit: Dylan Butler reports his first name is Salou) is still in Europe dealing with visa paperwork and is not expected to play Saturday.

Am I the only one who looks at the weather report for this weekend and briefly becomes elated before remembering that the Red Bulls are on the road this week? Don't let it get you down. The perfect weather, combined with a late night start against Seattle (10:30pm EDT) will provide you with an ideal opportunity to get in the good graces of your loved ones. Cross off a couple outdoor items on your "honey-do" lists. Enjoy a day out with the kids. Take your significant other out for dinner. It will pay dividends later in the season when you break the news that you're going on a road-trip for an away game to D.C. or New England.

Here's something I never imagined doing: Checking the Estonian National Team's schedule for Euro 2012 Qualifying. Here's their schedule for 2010:
  • August 11, v. Faroe Islands
  • September 3, v. Italy
  • October 8, @ Serbia
  • October 12, v. Slovenia
The Red Bull matches that would certainly be affected by Joel Lindpere's absence are:
  • August 11, v. Toronto FC
  • September 4, @ Real Salt Lake
  • October 9, v. Real Salt Lake

The front office has a couple of weeks now to get the online interfacing with Season Ticket accounts working properly. It would really be nice if we could print and email tickets, as well as add money to our cards, for the FC Dallas game on April 17. Get it done, guys!

I expect the April 17 game to be our low-water mark for attendance at a League match this season. FC Dallas is not exactly a heated rivalry, and probably not a part of many partial season plans. It's April and some of our fans are still away in college. It will hopefully mean some shorter lines at the concessions, and some easier travel to and from the Arena. No one should get overly comfortable, though, because the April 24 game against Philadelphia is likely to be a big draw.

Not yet announced is our home date against Philly in the opening round of U.S. Open Cup qualifying. It will be a midweek game, sometime in April. A win will earn us a second round game hosting New England a couple weeks later, exact time and date also TBD.

Bull Market: The Red Bulls announced today that team representatives will be ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on April 6. Managing Director, Erik Stover and Head Coach, Hans Backe, will be joined by team leaders, Juan Pablo Angel and Mike Petke for the event.

The all-Mexican semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League kicked off last night. Toluca rallied at home to pull even at 1-1 in the 77th minute, before going to 10 and then 9 men. They held on for the draw. Play continues tonight when Pumas UNAM hosts Cruz Azul.

I'm heading to my parents' for Easter and will be there Saturday night--they don't have Fox Soccer Channel. I'm trying to decide whether to avoid all contact with the internet until I get home to my DVR. Any opinions?
