Richie Williams Signs Contract Extension

The New York Red Bulls announced today that Assistant Manager, Richie Williams, has signed a contract extension. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Williams has been an assistant manager with the team since 2006, and has twice taken the reins as interim head coach. Prior to the Red Bulls decision to hire current Head Coach, Hans Backe, Williams was considered to be a top contender for the job. Following the hire of Backe, Williams agreed to return to his role as Assistant and it would seem he's impressed the new men in charge.

Red Bulls Sporting Director, Erik Solér, said "Richie has done a tremendous job during his time here and we are thrilled that he continues to be a very important member of our coaching staff. He is one of the top up-and-coming coaches in this country and we look forward to his contributions as we aim to reach the playoffs."

Coach Backe echoed Solér's sentiments, saying, "Richie has been an invaluable resource for the club since I joined the club in January. His ability to assess players both at the MLS and college level has been vital to our early success this season."
