Good Afternoon! Another fine day here in Jersey, albeit a scorcher, and the Red Bulls are back in action @The Cathedral of Football. It's the first game of friendly tournament dubbed the Barclays New York Challenge, with RBNY's opponent being London, England's famed Tottenham Hotspur FC.
Tottenham has qualified for the UEFA Champions League, for the first time in ages, thanks to a fourth place finish in the Premier League. This will be the second game of Spurs North American summer tour and the London club will be looking to better the scoreless draw played against the San Jose Earthquakes this past Saturday. That might be a problem for them, as Peter Crouch, Jermaine Defoe and Aaron Lennon are not participating in these friendlies, after taking part in England's World Cup campaign. You can check out the full Barclays New York Challenge rosters, for all the Euro teams that are participating, by clicking here.
The legendary France/Arsenal/Barcelona striker Thierry Henry will make his RBNY debut in this one. The former Spurs Killer would like nothing more than to begin his RBNY scoring tally against Arsenal's most bitter of rivals. Coach Backe will make several other lineup changes as well, including a mystery 20 yr old Brazilian (who's an Attacking Midfielder). Could this be the player we so deperately need? Well, let's see how he does in the 20 minutes, or so, he's expected to play. Back to TH14: ESPN Soccernet had this excellent Press Pass interview with him:
No predictions today, as this is a meaningless friendly. The TH14 debut, however, will make this game somewhat special. Please check back for our usual drunken commentary in the following days.
In other RBNY news:
We all now about the coming of Rafa Marquez (not official yet, but almost certain) but how about current Juventus forward David Trezeguet to RBNY?
