Good afternoon! Even more snow today, in RBNY Land, and the last batch hadn't even fully melted yet. But nevermind that, let's get to some news.
Theirry Henry recently had a training stint with London's Arsenal FC, as he wanted to get a head start on pre-season training. Now comes word that Rafa Marquez will also do the same by training with Mexican First Division club Atlas starting this coming Monday. Marquez will then join the Red Bulls when the team flies down to Mexico on February 1st. And speaking of pre-season training: it officially began yesterday, when RBNY players reported for physicals and fitness tests.
Remember how Brazilian playmaker Ze Roberto was linked to the Red Bulls this past summer? Unfortunately for us, he decided to stay at Hamburg and see out his contract (which runs until the end of the 2010-2011 season). Well, it seems that the legendary Brazilian is, once again, considering a move to RBNY.
University of Maryland, and Red Bulls Academy product, Matt Kassel has, apparently, signed with the Red Bulls. No official announcement yet from RBNY.
Defensive Midfielder Carl Robinson has been re-signed by RBNY. The 34 year old Welshman's new contract is for two years, with one of those being a club option.
Defender Carey Talley, who played a grand total of 40 minutes for RBNY last season, has decided to call it a career.
While in London, Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry was honored with the prestigious 2011 Football Writers’ Association Tribute. At the same event, he gave this interview where he (sort of) tips Arsenal to win the BPL Trophy. That's great, and all, but what I'm really looking forward is for the Henry/Agudelo strike partnership to get going.
The Red Bulls have announced that Norwegian Jan Halvor Halvorsen has joined the coaching staff as an assistant. Another Viking added to The Army, however, it's quite too bad that his first name isn't Hal.
Another name linked with the Red Bulls this week is Spaniard Aitor Ocio, currently a Center Back with Athletic Bilbao. According to this article, there has been interest from both the Chicago Fire and RBNY for Mr. Ocio's services.
Former Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel has officially signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy. The best of luck to JPA, except against us of course.
I case you missed it, check out this video of Mike Petke's "transition" from the playing field to the RBNY front office.
In other news:
Lots of Cosmos news this week, with the in-name-only team hiring the legendary Eric Cantona as Director of Soccer. Last week, the Cosmos announced the hiring of former US National Team legend Cobi Jones as Associate Director of Soccer. Another Comos Director of Soccer recently stated that talks with MLS have been progressing quite well. We know that The Soccer Don wants the team in MLS as soon as possible and at least one writer thinks this would be a great thing for the league.
I guess it's hard to argue with that, however... There should be no argument of the fact that Giorgio Chinaglia (yet another Cosmos "Director") is still an idiot. Yeah, Giorgio, Queens is about 50 miles from Red Bull Arena. That's all for now. Viper Out!
